A hand holds up a found piece of circular black rubber. Behind, a piece of white cotton fabric, is printed with black circles.

Block printing

Block printing is a traditional way of adding pattern and colour to fabric or paper. Dating back thousands of years, it was used to print books and textiles.

A block is usually a piece of wood or Lino, which is carved, to produce an image or design.

Then a fine layer of ink is applied to its surface using a roller, and the “block” is pressed onto the material and peeled away, to reveal a mirror image print.

This method of printing has been sucessfully adapted, by using beach plastic as unconventional blocks, to communicate our need for utilising waste as an important resource.
